HE>i we’ve all seen it on bumper stickers, but have we ever thought about the meaning behind it? Funny enough, many, including myself until about a year or so ago, don’t even know what the logo meant because of the unique way it is formatted. HE>i is actually a company based in The State of Hawaii, they sell things like bumper stickers and other merchandise. They are very successful because it is a subtle way to represent belief in GOD, and also a great reminder that, well, HE is greater than I!
So what do those five words mean? On the HE>i website, there is a particular passage from John’s Gospel on some of their merchandise, John 3:30, which says “HE must become greater; I must become less.” This is actually a quote from John the Baptist talking about JESUS. John was after all, the one who Isaiah spoke of when he said “I am a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Clear the way for the LORD’s coming!’” So what was John saying here? It is really quite simple. Christianity is much more than a religion, it is a relationship, and in a relationship, one cannot be selfish. When it comes down to it, all sin can be traced back to selfishness, it all started with that snake in the Garden, Adam and Eve’s decision was one of selfishness. Think of any sin, and I guarantee that it can be traced back to selfishness. We are born innately sinful, “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” (Romans 3:23), and this is why so many of us are so focused on ourselves, I am as guilty of this as anyone else.
JESUS spoke often about masters and servants, HE did, after all, say things like, “If you
love ME, you will keep MY commandments.” HE spoke with authority, and taught to obey masters, and to obey HIM. This is how our relationship with GOD should be, it should be one of worship. The difference between Christianity and other religions is that with other religions you need to complete a checklist to be saved, but in Christianity you don’t believe in order to be saved, you believe because you are grateful that you are saved.
The simplest way to put it is, we did not create the universe, GOD did, so we worship HIM, not the other way around. Like The LORD told Job “‘Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell ME, if you have understanding.” I can’t speak for everyone, but I can speak for myself; I worship because I am grateful, I worship because I am in awe, I worship because of the cross, and what HE did for me, so yes, HE>i.
