Moving to a new School

By: Meghan DeLange

Most of us have probably moved and started a completely new school maybe once or twice. Or like me; more than ten times. It's a pretty usual occurrence to get a new student at your school part way through the year. I personally have plenty of experience in changing schools often, It definitely gives me mixed feelings. It can be nice to start fresh at a new place but you also might not see the people from your old school anymore which can be sad. Coming in part way through the school year can be a challenge sometimes because everyone else has already known each other for months or even years.

When you start a new school you often just come in at a random time. Usually it's partway through a lesson (that is probably something totally different from what you were working on at your old school a few days prior.) I am normally pretty confused and have to play catchup for a while. Since Everyone else already knows each other and you don’t know them, you often get the awkward moment of the teacher introducing you to the class and everyone knowing your name but you not knowing anyone else’s. Often people are all pretty nice to you or at least in my experience they try to make me feel as comfortable as possible.

Moving to Auburn definitely has been a change for me from what I’m used to. I was homeschooled before coming here so I was always doing school in my room alone, but now at Auburn I am out a whole lot more. Plus I am around a whole lot more people other than my family, especially during the day when all the dorm and village kids are here. Since coming here I definitely have come out of my shell a lot more and I have started to make new friends. Change definitely can be challenging sometimes but it can also be a good experience and help you grow as a person.
