Volleyball and soccer season are over, and basketball is currently in season. Over the recent months I have gotten the pleasure of witnessing how student athletes have played hard whether that is winning a game or losing a game. Each game means a lot to these student athletes and has a great impact on how they perform and treat their teammates. Drew, a guard on the boys' varsity basketball team says, “what I love most about basketball is the hard work I have to put in to get better…I like just grinding and putting in the work every day…. this helps me with my teammates as me being a hard worker, I just try to spread it with my teammates just for all of us to be hardworking as a team, as a unit. If we all are hard-working, we can reach our goals, and who knows how far we can go.” A senior guard on the jv boys’ basketball team goes on to say, “What I love most about basketball is that basketball changed my anxiety because in basketball it’s 90% mental, and only 10% physical…it really changed my mentality.” This affects how he treats his teammates because he says, “our coaches always tell us tosupport each other, we got to love each other.” These aren’t just words for nothing, these players live it out, they show it on the court, on the field, and it is shown with their peers. The chemistry they have with their teammates is like no other. It goes to show that all of the hard work these players put in really does pay off, even when one has a tough game they still manage to pull through. Playing sports can teach you so much. It can instill good life lessons for players to take with when moving forward, it can train them in sportsmanship etc. “Soccer has taught me that life stings, things aren’t going to go your way and things are hard…you learn that not everything is easy, that you’re going to go through these hard times, you have to get through them and be better for the next one.” says Graham. Sports gives these student athletes something to look forward to with each practice, game, win, and every loss. The impact a sport can have on each player is like a breath of fresh air.
