5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Going To Highschool

Highschool is a pretty crazy time. We have some of our most memorable and embarrassing moments. My time in high school has been a bit of a rollercoaster. As I keep growing I continue to experience and learn new things. So for today’s article I will be talking about 5 things I wish I knew before high school (Auburn edition)

  1. Hard Work Pays Off

If you think that your freshman year is going to be easy so you can slack off, YOU’RE WRONG! Freshman year the work piles up, teachers expect more of you, and all you think about is having fun. Then the work starts becoming harder and it gets overwhelming. But when you start applying, and work hard, things become easier. When you keep trying and ask questions it's a whole lot better for you. So when you don’t understand something, ask questions. When things keep piling up and you’re slacking, find time to do your work. And do things well. After you’ve finished something it feels so good to have accomplished and have been productive. As you get older things do become harder and once you have a good organized schedule of everything, things become easier.

2. Be Open and Willing

A lot of opportunities open up during high school. If you are willing to take risks and join different activities you might find something you really enjoy. You might find some new friends as well. In my journey throughout high school I was never involved in anything until my Junior year. And once I did, I had so much fun trying different things and being a part of planning events. We came up with new creative ideas and worked together. It’s something you’ll miss out on and something you won’t regret. So if you want to run for an officer for your class or ASB, do it!! It can’t hurt to try and once you do it will be an experience you won’t regret.

3. Embarrassing Things Happen! It’s Okay

I have had SO MANY embarrassing things happen to me in the past 3 years. On my first day of high school I had one of the worst things happen to me. I came from a small school and graduated 8th grade with only 5 other students and I was so nervous about coming into an even bigger school. My first class of the day was P.E. We had been waiting for about 10 minutes before our teacher came. The bathroom was locked and I was so nervous and the only thing we had been doing was talking about the rules. When I suddenly felt it. I ran to the trash can and puked in front of my whole class. I was so embarrassed and I cried for about half an hour. But you know? I forgot about it the next day. Things happen, don’t overthink about it because usually people don’t care. And a couple years later you’ll be laughing about it.

4. Quality Over, Quantity!

When going into high school it’s easy to want to become that “popular” kid who everyone likes and has so many friends. But don’t let the “cool'' get to your brain. It can be exhausting to have so many people around you. And I’ve come to realize the quality of your friends is so much more important than the quantity. If you find a good solid group of friends there’s really nothing to worry about. You share moments and jokes with each other and they have your back.

5. Have School Spirit!

Coming into high school it’s easy to go by and think showing your school spirit and annoying or “uncool”. But in all honesty it’s one of the best memories I’ve had. Before this whole pandemic thing happened and we could have tug-of-war and blind taste testing were the coolest events ever! I loved the rush of yelling and cheering, then losing my voice the next morning. Participating in events and taking pictures with my friends. You may think that showing school spirit shows that you’re childish or you’re “too mature” for it, but frankly we’re all still children at heart here. Have fun and live in the moment. You’ll be here for only a fraction of your life. Why not live it to the fullest?
