Faith Based on Evidence?

Updated: Dec 8, 2020

Faith‌ ‌Based‌ ‌on‌ ‌Evidence?‌ ‌I‌ ‌was‌ ‌raised‌ ‌in‌ ‌a‌ ‌Christian‌ ‌household,‌ ‌I‌ ‌never‌ ‌questioned‌ ‌whether‌ ‌G‌od‌‌ ‌existed‌ ‌or‌ ‌whether‌ ‌the‌ ‌Bible‌ ‌was‌ ‌true.‌ ‌I‌ ‌felt‌ ‌like‌ ‌I‌ ‌had‌ ‌a‌ ‌good‌ ‌relationship‌ ‌with‌ ‌G‌od‌‌ ‌and‌ ‌I‌ ‌was‌ ‌baptized.‌ ‌It‌ ‌all‌ ‌felt‌ ‌good‌ ‌and‌ ‌I‌ ‌never‌ ‌second‌ ‌guessed‌ ‌it.‌ ‌More‌ ‌recently‌ ‌I‌ ‌started‌ ‌to‌ ‌stumble‌ ‌upon‌ ‌videos‌ ‌and‌ ‌books‌ ‌talking‌ ‌about‌ ‌the‌ ‌reasons‌ ‌to‌ ‌be‌ ‌a‌ ‌Christian,‌ ‌called‌ ‌apologetics.‌ ‌I‌ ‌believe‌ ‌it‌ ‌is‌ ‌crucial‌ ‌to‌ ‌understand‌ ‌why‌ ‌I‌ ‌believe‌ ‌what‌ ‌I‌ ‌believe.‌ ‌Many‌ ‌would‌ ‌think‌ ‌that‌ ‌going‌ ‌on‌ ‌a‌ ‌trail‌ ‌to‌ ‌find‌ ‌truth‌ ‌would‌ ‌lead‌ ‌someone‌ ‌like‌ ‌me‌ ‌to‌ ‌atheism,‌ ‌but‌ ‌that‌ ‌is‌ ‌not‌ ‌what‌ ‌happened.‌

When‌ ‌I‌ ‌began‌ ‌researching‌ ‌and‌ ‌critically‌ ‌thinking‌ ‌about‌ ‌my‌ ‌faith,‌ ‌I‌ ‌found‌ ‌a‌ ‌massive‌ ‌landslide‌ ‌of‌ ‌evidence‌ ‌for‌ ‌my‌ ‌faith.‌ ‌I‌ ‌grew‌ ‌in‌ ‌my‌ ‌faith‌ ‌more‌ ‌than‌ ‌ever‌ ‌before.‌ ‌When‌ ‌you‌ ‌realize‌ certain‌ ‌key‌ ‌things,‌ ‌your‌ ‌faith‌ ‌grows.‌ ‌I‌ ‌found‌ ‌that,‌ ‌for‌ ‌one,‌ ‌the‌ ‌evidence‌ ‌that‌ ‌the‌ ‌Bible‌ ‌is‌ ‌the‌ ‌W‌ord‌ ‌‌of‌ ‌G‌od‌‌ ‌and‌ ‌that‌ ‌J‌esus‌ ‌‌is‌ ‌who‌ ‌H‌e‌‌ ‌says‌ ‌H‌e‌‌ ‌is‌ ‌so‌ ‌overwhelming‌ ‌that‌ ‌I‌ ‌have‌ ‌found‌ ‌it‌ ‌to‌ ‌take‌ ‌far‌ ‌more‌ ‌faith‌ ‌to‌ ‌be‌ ‌an‌ ‌atheist,‌ ‌than‌ ‌to‌ ‌be‌ ‌a‌ ‌Christian.‌ ‌History‌ ‌is‌ ‌always‌ ‌in‌ ‌line‌ ‌with‌ ‌the‌ ‌Scripture,‌ ‌and‌ ‌so‌ ‌is‌ ‌science.‌ ‌In‌ ‌fact,‌ ‌I‌ ‌have‌ ‌seen‌ ‌no‌ ‌better‌ ‌explanation‌ ‌for‌ ‌the‌ ‌world‌ ‌being‌ ‌the‌ ‌way‌ ‌it‌ ‌is‌ ‌than‌ ‌the‌ ‌Bible.‌ ‌I‌ ‌found‌ ‌that‌ ‌I‌ ‌no‌ ‌longer‌ ‌have‌ ‌blind‌ ‌faith‌ ‌as‌ ‌so‌ ‌many‌ ‌Christians‌ ‌do.‌ ‌I‌ ‌have‌ ‌faith‌ ‌not‌ ‌that‌ ‌G‌od ‌is‌ ‌real,‌ ‌but‌ ‌that‌ ‌H‌e‌‌ ‌will‌ ‌keep‌ ‌H‌is ‌promises.‌ ‌Another‌ ‌word‌ ‌for‌ ‌that‌ ‌is‌ ‌trust.‌ ‌I‌ ‌look‌ ‌at‌ ‌the‌ ‌journeys‌ ‌of‌ ‌people‌ ‌like‌ ‌Lee‌ ‌Strobel,‌ ‌who‌ ‌went‌ ‌from‌ ‌atheism‌ ‌to‌ ‌faith‌ ‌and‌ ‌people‌ ‌like‌ ‌me‌ ‌who‌ ‌were‌ ‌already‌ ‌a‌ ‌Christian‌ ‌and‌ ‌have‌ ‌greater‌ ‌faith,‌ ‌both‌ ‌end‌ ‌results‌ ‌are‌ ‌the‌ ‌same.‌ ‌I‌ ‌have‌ ‌observed‌ ‌the‌ ‌path‌ ‌of‌ ‌the‌ ‌search‌ ‌for‌ ‌truth‌ ‌seems‌ ‌to‌ ‌commonly‌ ‌end‌ ‌at‌ ‌C‌hrist.‌ ‌I‌ ‌believe‌ ‌that‌ ‌J‌esus‌ ‌‌of‌ ‌Nazareth‌ ‌claimed‌ ‌to‌ ‌be‌ ‌G‌od‌‌ ‌incarnate‌ ‌and‌ ‌I‌ ‌believe‌ ‌that‌ ‌H‌e‌‌ ‌backed‌ ‌it‌ ‌up‌ ‌by‌ ‌definitively‌ ‌rising‌ ‌from‌ ‌the‌ ‌dead.‌ ‌Because‌ ‌I‌ ‌believe‌ ‌these‌ ‌things,‌ ‌I‌ ‌believe‌ ‌we‌ ‌are‌ ‌all‌ ‌in‌ ‌need‌ ‌of‌ ‌a‌ ‌S‌avior‌.‌ ‌The‌ ‌Bible‌ ‌provides‌ ‌hope,‌ ‌and‌ ‌because‌ ‌I‌ ‌have‌ ‌looked‌ ‌into‌ ‌this,‌ ‌it‌ ‌is‌ ‌not‌ ‌blind‌ ‌hope.‌ ‌I‌ ‌know‌ ‌I‌ ‌am‌ ‌a‌ ‌sinner,‌ ‌I‌ ‌know‌ ‌that‌ ‌I‌ ‌am‌ ‌not‌ ‌owed‌ ‌anything,‌ ‌and‌ ‌yet,‌ ‌I‌ ‌know‌ ‌C‌hrist‌‌ ‌died‌ ‌for‌ ‌me.‌ ‌This‌ ‌is‌ ‌something‌ ‌that‌ ‌I‌ ‌think‌ ‌about‌ ‌every‌ ‌day.‌ ‌Although‌ ‌we‌ ‌strive‌ ‌to‌ ‌be‌ ‌good,‌ ‌J‌esus ‌himself ‌‌said,‌ ‌“Why‌ ‌do‌ ‌you‌ ‌call‌ ‌me‌ ‌good?‌ ‌Only‌ ‌G‌od‌ ‌‌is‌ ‌truly‌ ‌good.”‌ ‌I‌ ‌believe‌ ‌that‌ ‌J‌ESUS‌‌ ‌is,‌ ‌like‌ ‌He ‌claimed,‌ ‌the‌ ‌W‌ay‌,‌ ‌the‌ ‌T‌ruth,‌ ‌and‌ the‌ ‌L‌ife‌.‌ ‌I‌ ‌also‌ ‌believe‌ ‌that‌ ‌the‌ ‌Scriptures‌ ‌are‌ ‌the‌ ‌ultimate‌ ‌W‌ord‌‌ ‌of‌ ‌G‌od‌.‌ ‌I‌ ‌do‌ ‌not‌ ‌believe‌ ‌this‌ ‌because‌ ‌I‌ ‌want‌ ‌to,‌ ‌I‌ ‌do‌ ‌not‌ ‌believe‌ ‌this‌ ‌because‌ ‌it‌ ‌makes‌ ‌me‌ ‌feel‌ ‌good,‌ ‌although‌ ‌it‌ ‌does.‌ ‌I‌ ‌believe‌ ‌these‌ ‌things‌ ‌because‌ ‌I‌ ‌have‌ ‌seen‌ ‌the‌ ‌evidence,‌ ‌and‌ ‌if‌ ‌the‌ ‌evidence‌ ‌leads‌ ‌me‌ ‌to‌ ‌believe‌ ‌that‌ ‌J‌esus‌ ‌is‌ ‌indeed‌ ‌who‌ ‌H‌e ‌‌says‌ ‌H‌e‌‌ ‌is,‌ ‌I‌ ‌would‌ ‌be‌ ‌a‌ ‌fool‌ ‌not‌ ‌to‌ ‌repent‌ ‌and‌ ‌trust‌ ‌in‌ ‌H‌im‌.‌

I‌ ‌think‌ ‌that‌ ‌it‌ ‌is‌ ‌crucial‌ ‌to‌ ‌understand‌ ‌why‌ ‌we‌ ‌believe‌ ‌what‌ ‌we‌ ‌believe.‌ ‌I‌ ‌will‌ ‌be‌ ‌writing‌ ‌about‌ ‌the‌ ‌Bible‌ ‌here‌ ‌once‌ ‌a‌ ‌month.‌ ‌If‌ ‌you‌ ‌have‌ ‌any‌ ‌questions‌ ‌about‌ ‌faith‌ ‌and‌ ‌the‌ ‌Bible,‌ ‌I‌ ‌would‌ ‌love‌ ‌to‌ ‌discuss‌ ‌and‌ ‌or‌ ‌write‌ ‌about‌ ‌it.‌ ‌You‌ ‌can‌ ‌email‌ ‌me‌ ‌at‌ ‌‌rainier.echoes@auburn.org with‌ ‌any‌ ‌suggestions.‌ ‌G‌od ‌Bless!‌
