Inauguration Day

January 20th has marked an important day for our country for many many years. Inauguration day is our country's national day where we have a traditional transfer of power from one leading president to the next. Usually this process happens around noon. The current president always shows up as a sign of respect as they pass their responsibilities on to the President Elect. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) is responsible for planning the Inauguration day program. They have been in charge of this process since 1901. The only way that Inauguration day can be moved is if January 20th happened to land on a sunday. Then, the date will be moved to noon on January 21st.

Usually, Inauguration day is a pretty smooth process! However, this specific inauguration may go down as one of the most unique in history. This year the inauguration took place in the middle of a global pandemic. Usually the White House area is crowded with people (to some extent)! Unfortunately, because of the pandemic, that could not happen this year. Also, because of safety concerns surrounding the domestic terrorism attack on our capital building that took place on January 6th, attention to the security and protection of our country’s leaders has been increased. The average amount of security and protective people at this event is usually about five thousand. This year, a staggering twenty-five thousand security members worked to protect those in attendance.

This year, Joseph R. Biden and Kamala Harris were sworn into office taking an oath under the constitution. For the first time in over one-hundred years the outgoing president, Donald Trump, did not show up to offer his support to the President and Vice President Elect. As a result , it was harder to see a clear positive transfer of power. Biden gave an opening speech that included information about his plans on how to go about solving some of our country's big problems and rebuilding relationships with other countries.

I think the message is clear in our communities and school. Though we may have a different president, we have the same God. We must remember who we serve, and that no matter who is in charge in our country, we have a loving Father up in heaven.
