Since the start of quarantine, everything that was either in our control or in someone's control might not be in control anymore. This loss of control makes it difficult at times to be motivated to do things. The control that we have now and had before can be seen in different ways. Some of the goals we had before we lost control might change after we lose that control. Why is that? Most people end up setting their goals on lagging indicators rather than leading indicators. You may be asking yourself what these indicators really are. Let me explain. A lagging indicator is something outside of your control. An example of this is, I might tell myself that I want to lose 10 pounds even though it might now seem like it is really out of your control. Leading indicators are a different story. They are things that are really in your control. Using the same example, instead of saying I wanna lose 10 pounds I can tell myself that I want to complete a certain amount of exercise a day, and use a diet to lose weight. Why is this way so much better for us as people? For starters, if I were to set my goals based off of my leading indicators, then not only can I reach those 10 pounds that I wanted, but I might even go way past that and do even more than what I wanted to do. Also by doing this, you can create good habits for yourself to continue even after you reach that goal. Not only is this the reason why this is so effective, but the psychological part of it is that when you set goals based off of what you can control then things like a global pandemic will not completely hold you back from what your goals are. You will just be happier in general if you set yourself goals based off of things that you can control rather than things that you wish to achieve.
